A Different Perspective

A Different Perspective brought several strands of Ken’s practice together at Retro Africa Gallery in Abuja in 2022. Paintings from Packages in Brown Skin appeared alongside Journey Mercies, his installation of cardboard boxes painted with portraits.

The boxes resemble parcels that can be stacked, shipped and handled. Painted with faces, they ask viewers to consider the people behind the language and systems of migration. In the paintings, familiar scenes of Nigerian life are interrupted by a figure looking out from behind the surface. What first seems straightforward asks for a second look.

The exhibition also included sculpture and moving image, extending these ideas beyond the canvas. Curated by Dolly Kola-Balogun and Maurice Chapot.
